If your people, meaning those whom We have given the ability to act upon what they attempt from that example, are turning away, meaning they are making noise and raising their voices in joy because they believe they have triumphed over what they claim is a contradiction. Thus, they are turning away from answering your supplication. It is said: he turned away from him, meaning he disregarded him. And 'turning away' means to make noise - as stated in the dictionary. Therefore, Ibn al-Jawzi said: its meaning is both, meaning the reading with the 'dhamma' of the letter 'sad' and the reading with the 'kasra' of it - they are making noise. And it may be that the meaning of the 'dhamma' is: they are turning away. Ibn Burjan said: and the 'kasra' is the higher of the two readings - this is the end of it. And that is because the Quraysh said as mentioned in the Prophets: 'Indeed, we and what we worship are in Hell,' implying that Jesus is like that, and that we are equal to our idols with him. For he is among those who are worshipped, and we are pleased with his equality to us - until the end of what they said. And what was responded to them by glorified and exalted is He from the verse, is from the general which is intended to be specific, as is implied by their words and their tongue that the original meaning of 'what' is for that which does not have intellect. And that is what is intended from His saying, the Most High, narrating about them:
