Commentary
And when it was with Pharaoh and with those like him, who are blinded in insight and lacking understanding, standing with delusion that proximity to kings and dominance over affairs can only be through abundance of worldly possessions and adorning oneself with the adornments of kings, this led to his claim of his prophethood from the King of kings, which necessitates closeness to Him, his saying: ﴿So if not﴾. And when miracles, gifts, and honors are bestowed upon the one honored by them, he expressed it by saying: ﴿It was cast﴾, meaning from any one who casts it upon him from his sender, who claims that he is the true king. ﴿Bracelets﴾ is the plural of bracelets - this was said by Al-Zajjaj, and he used the singular form in the manner of the plural, like public and disliked. And the bracelet is what is placed on the wrist as adornment ﴿of gold﴾, so that this would be a sign of the truthfulness of his claims, just as we do when we bestow upon one of our servants by sending to a direction for an important matter. ﴿Or he came with him﴾, meaning his companionship when he came to us with this great news and tremendous event. ﴿The angels﴾, meaning this type, and he indicated their abundance by what he clarified of the situation with his saying: ﴿Accompanying﴾, meaning some of them accompany others, filling the space and being in utmost proximity to him, such that he is alongside them to respond to this matter which he came seeking, just as we do when we send a messenger to a matter that requires defense, dispute, and contention. Thus, the outcome of his affair was as you see that he was strengthened by the flow of water, so Allah destroyed him by it, indicating that whoever is strengthened by something other than Allah, Allah will destroy him by it. And Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, belittled him and criticized him for his poverty and misguidance, indicating that no one belittles anything except that it overcomes him - this was conveyed by Al-Qushayri.
