Commentary

And when they had indeed acted in denial of his message, blessings and peace be upon him, and mocked it as Quraysh had done, he said to console the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and to threaten them regarding what he intended by saying: They said to him, 'Bring us a sign.' So he brought it as has been mentioned before, more than once, with clarity and beauty, like the sun: ﴿So when he came to them with Our signs﴾ by bringing forth the signs of the hand and the staff, in which they witnessed our greatness and which indicated to them our power over all signs. ﴿Then they﴾ meaning all of them, mocked our Messenger, and he has long been laughing at them, he and those who believed in his message and what he brought from us on the Day of Regret and Remorse. ﴿From it they laugh﴾ meaning they came to the arrival of it without hesitation or laziness, laughing in mockery and derision.
