Commentary

And when the infliction may harm the body, and the estimation is necessarily by what the context has guided to, it will be said to them: 'So that will not benefit you today when you come to us, as you wished for them this wish when you witnessed those horrors, your sharing today in the Day of the World in injustice and your collusion upon it, and the rivalry of some of you against others.' He added to it his saying: 'And it will not benefit you today,' meaning in the world, anything of benefit at all, 'when you have wronged,' while you are in a state of sharing in injustice, cooperating upon it, and supporting one another in it. Each one of you says to his companion, delighted with him, drawing close to him, and being affectionate: 'I wish we would never part; you are indeed a good companion.' It will be said to them in reproach: 'That you are in the punishment,' meaning the great punishment. He preceded it out of concern for warning against it and instilling fear of it, 'sharing,' meaning your sharing in it is constant. Your injustice to yourselves is an internal injustice due to matters that the nature has concealed in the hearts, and it necessitates confusion in the traps of sins that lead to the evident punishment on the Day of wishing and the Day of Resurrection, a tangible and felt punishment. This is like someone who suffers a severe wound while being unconscious; he is certainly tormented by it, but he does not feel it except when he regains consciousness. It is as if you say to people who want to conspire to kill a forbidden soul: 'It will not benefit you today when you cooperate in killing him; your sharing tomorrow in destruction by tight imprisonment and lethal beating and striking of necks.' Your intention by that is to deter them from their injustice by reminding them that they will reach this state, and what they are in of support will cease, so nothing from it will benefit them - and Allah is the Grantor of success. The verse is from the interweaving, and by it, what was from the grammatical interpretations that caused confusion has been removed. 'Oh, I wish' - to the end of it, indicates the estimation of its opposite secondly. 'And it will not benefit you' - to the end of it, indicates the estimation of something like it first.
