And when it was that one who strayed from the path, and one who thought that he was upon correctness could hardly persist, but rather the situation would become clear to him by the proximity of a conjunction to the two past wonders, a third wonder clarifying for him what his estimation is: And we allow for this evening a gradual leading to him and a trial for others, and we extend that for the length of his life until he confirms the news by saying: When he knew from the gathering in what was said that the intended meaning was the species, and that the oneness was the most evident proof for encompassing every individual, thus the expression by it was more severe, and the context indicated to whom the pronoun referred, he said: 'It has come to us,' meaning the evening, and whoever read in the dual intended the evening and the companion. He said: 'O how I wish there was between me and you,' O companion, 'the distance of the two east.' Meaning what is between the east and the west in predominance - this was said by Ibn Jarir and others, or the east of winter and summer, meaning the distance of one from the other; then he caused from this wishing his saying, gathering for him types of blame: 'So wretched is the companion,' meaning I have come to know that you are the one who led me astray and brought me to this constricted life and the place of disgrace, and I felt at that time that which you used to harm me with, that it was a severe harm. Thus, I was like one who scratches his body due to what he has from festering wounds until blood comes out from him, and at first he finds pleasure in that which is painful to him in his own self to the utmost degree of pain.
