And when the clear verse of enjoyment indicated and hinted thereafter that the expansion in provision, which necessitates elevation, is indeed of a low status and deficient measure, it requires deviation from the norm. The estimation was: So we specify this goodness for individuals in the singular stages of the righteous, to rescue by it whomever we will from misguidance, and we give the debris to the tyrants, the lowly rabble, as a test for the servants, to clarify for them the people of tyranny from the people of guidance. And were it not for what our wisdom necessitated by arranging this existence upon the causes of disparity among people for the establishment of existence, we would have made them equal. And He added: His saying reminds of His kindness towards the believers and His righteousness towards them by elevating what necessitates for them intense striving and great endurance and hardship for a state in which the feet slip from the paths of guidance due to inclining and listening to the sources of wealth, dominion, and the completeness of ability and greatness: "And were it not that people" meaning the people of enjoyment with wealth, due to the disturbance among them and their comfort with themselves, "a single nation" meaning in misguidance through disbelief, for their belief that our giving of wealth is evidence of our love for whom we have given it, due to their love for this world and making it the focus of their sights and ambitions, except for whom Allah has protected. "We would have made" meaning in every time and place, with what we have of greatness which no one can oppose due to the insignificance of this world to us and our aversion to it. (p-425) "For whoever disbelieves" and His saying: "In the Most Merciful" meaning the general mercy is evidence of the insignificance of this world in terms of granting it to the distant, despised one, and that the attribute of mercy necessitates the ultimate expansion of blessings upon the disbeliever, were it not for the reason that He mentioned, glorified and exalted is He, of kindness towards the believers.
And when the adornment of the circumstance is always according to the adornment of the adorned, it indicated what they have of their garments and their mounts and other matters of theirs by the adornment of the houses. So He said, replacing "for whom" with the alternative of inclusion, for its market on the path of substitution is more splendid: "For their houses" meaning those in which they reside, "roofs" meaning this type in the reading of Ibn Kathir and Abu Amr in the singular, evidenced by the reading of the others in the dual as a plural. "Of silver" as if He specified it for its ability to convey light. "And stairways" meaning of silver, which are the ascents from the stairs, for walking upon them is like the walking of the lame. "Upon them they appear" meaning they ascend and rise upon their backs to the heights.
