Commentary
And when the decree was: the enjoyment of the blessings upon them and our hastening of them to them did not deter them, despite the clarity of the matter to them. Rather, the bestowal of blessings upon them was a cause for their arrogance. And arrogance was a cause for their persistence in seeking assistance from Our blessings in disobeying Our command, while they claim that they are the followers of the truth and refrain from falsehood. He then referred to His saying: "And when the truth came to them," meaning the complete truth in its reality, matching the actual occurrence without any confusion or ambiguity, evident in its perfection to all who have the slightest understanding of what the Qur'an contains of miraculousness in its composition, and what it calls to from wisdom among all of its wisdoms, and the agreement with what they know of the religion of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, before they altered it, and of the matter of Musa and Isa, blessings and peace be upon them, regarding the oneness of Allah. They added to that negligence, which was brought about by arrogance in the blessings, something worse than that, which is the denial that they said, challenging and stubbornly, with good and oppression, without any pause or reflection: "This," pointing to the truth that corresponds to reality. There is nothing more established than it, which is the Qur'an and other evidence it brought of the signs of knowledge. They said: "Magic," meaning an illusion that has no reality. And when the situation necessitated, without a doubt and without pause for their knowledge of what was brought to them and their submission to it, they said, affirming to its defender what was established in their souls from that: "And indeed, we are disbelievers in it," meaning deeply rooted in concealing it specifically, so that no one would know it and it would have no followers.
