And when they denied that they would return with it from what they were in, and that it would be from Allah, he confirmed what contradicts them from his saying in the past at the end of Ash-Shura that it is light, guidance, and a spirit, expressing by making that without the revelation because it has been indicated by all the previous surahs, sometimes by its wording and other times by the wording of revelation. So he said, swearing by the Book on the greatness of the Book. The fat one said: And from their eloquence is the fact that the oath and that which is sworn upon are from one valley. If the Book is intended to mean the Qur'an, then if it is intended to mean something broader than it, some of the oath is by it. He directed the saying to the manifestation of greatness, honoring the Book: 'Indeed, We have made it,' meaning We have made it and placed it and named it in accordance with its state by expressing its meanings with what we have of greatness. 'A Qur'an,' meaning with its being a collection of letters and meanings, gathering, and with its being a gathering distinguishing between the ambiguous. 'In Arabic,' meaning flowing according to the laws of their language in realities and metaphors, and the metaphor in it is predominant because it is more eloquent, especially the metaphors and similes. He directed the saying away from specifying his Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, by addressing them, honoring him, blessings and peace be upon him, and them in what he intends with them, and alerting them to the lowliness of their matter at the time of its revelation. So he said: 'Perhaps you will understand,' meaning so that you may be, O Arabs, in hope with one who is valid in hope from you that you understand that it is from us, you did not seek for it anyone against us, and you comprehend its meanings and all that is within the capacity of humans regarding what is intended by its rulings and its judgments, and the wondrous description of it and its miraculous description and its system. So you may turn away from all that you are in of the struggle, and this action must occur, for indeed the Able, when he expresses by the tool of hope, realizes what he hopes for, so that there is a difference between his words and the words of the incapable. And this gathering will reach your farthest as it has been presented to your nearest, and each of you knows that he is incapable of competing with a verse of it in the beauty of its meaning, the eloquence of its words, and the grandeur of its composition. And he organized every word of it in the place that cannot be moved from it by advancing or delaying, nor can anything be replaced with it that conveys its meaning or takes its place. Just as that is in the utmost clarity in the balance of 'In retaliation there is life' [Al-Baqarah: 179] with 'killing is a deterrent to killing,' and that is part of a verse, so how about a verse and above it? Then the giants of your minds will submit to it, and the foreheads of your intellects will prostrate to it, and the heights of your thoughts will be humbled by its might. So you will hasten to accept it and rush to preserve it and bear it, knowing that it is a pride for you that no pride can compare to, and an honor that no honor can rival. Then a person among you will reflect on whoever opposed him in it, whether from afar or near, a child or a parent, until all creatures submit to him, and the towering mountains shrink in awe of his greatness. And the verse is looking at the verse of 'If We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said' [Fussilat: 44].
