9Is it that they have adopted patrons instead of Him? So, it is Allah who is the Patron, and He gives life to the dead, and He is Powerful to do every thing.

Commentary

And when the estimation was: Did those whose aspirations, intentions, words, and actions you warn, limit themselves to Allah, the Exalted, as a lesson and a warning by this miraculous speech? He equated it with His saying: ﴿Or have they taken﴾ meaning they dealt with their innate nature witnessing that by the testimony of the times of necessity until they turned away from Him, glorified is He. So they took ﴿besides Him allies﴾ knowing that they do not avail them in anything. For this reason, He said: ﴿So Allah﴾ meaning He caused what the form of causation indicated, that they know that He alone is the harmful and the beneficial, their knowledge (p-254) that ﴿He﴾ alone is ﴿the Guardian﴾ and none other than Him. It is permissible that this is a consequence of this interrogative denial and reproach, as if it were said: Did they limit their aspirations to Him, glorified is He? So it caused that He is praised, the One deserving of what they intend from the guardianship. ﴿And He﴾ also alone, none other than Him, ﴿gives life to the dead﴾ meaning He renews their lives at any time He wishes. ﴿And He﴾ meaning alone, ﴿is capable of all things﴾ meaning He has complete power, and nothing shares with Him in that, by the testimony of every rational being. And He emphasized it with exclusivity because their associating with allies is a denial of His exclusivity in guardianship.
