Commentary
And when this was the case, his saying produced a clear result: ﴿Respond﴾ meaning seek the response and bring it forth. The saying directed attention to the description of benevolence as a reminder of what encourages agreement and makes one shy of disagreement and discord. He said: ﴿To your Lord﴾ who you have not seen any benevolence except that it is from Him in what He has called you to through His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding fulfilling His covenant in His commands and prohibitions. And do not be among those who abandon that, lest you be among those who know that they have gone astray, and the path has become closed off to them.
And when the fear of loss necessitates promptness, he indicated by the neighbor that the least good is considered in the least time that is connected to death: ﴿Before a day comes﴾ meaning in which there will be no possibility of success; then he described it with his saying, directing attention to the Greatest Name that encompasses the attributes of benevolence and favor upon the obedient, and the subjugation and vengeance upon the disobedient: ﴿There is no turning back﴾ meaning no return and no place of return and no time of return ﴿for Him﴾ that exists ﴿from Allah﴾ meaning the One to whom belongs all greatness. And if there is no return from Him, then there is no return from others. And whenever that is absent, his saying produces: ﴿What is [the matter] with you﴾ and he emphasized the negation with his saying: ﴿There is no refuge on that day﴾ meaning a place to which you can flee on that day and a fortress in which you can take shelter from something you dislike. And he increased in emphasis by repeating the negation and what is in its scope to convey the warning, saying: ﴿And there is no denier for you﴾ meaning no denial that can enable you to escape, for the guardians will testify against you. If you are truthful to them, then otherwise your limbs and skins will testify against you. And there is no one who denies anything of what you surpass in order to save you from it.
