45And you will see them that they will be presented to it (the Fire), downcast because of humiliation, looking with stealthy glance. And those who believe will say, “The real losers are those who have lost their own selves and their families on the Day of Judgment.” Be aware that the wrongdoers are in lasting punishment.

Commentary

And when they established their vision of the punishment, He established their proximity to its place. And between their state in that proximity, He said: ﴿And you will see them﴾ meaning, O most complete of creation, and O you who longs for knowledge of their state, with your own eyes, at the time of their being ﴿exhibited﴾ meaning, He renews their exhibition and repeats it. This is their being compelled to compare it with their exhibition that necessitates their alignment with it as well, by their length, so that they may know that it is their destination, and there is no barrier for it from them ﴿upon it﴾ meaning, the Fire which is the abode of punishment, repeating their exhibition for a long time in the standing position, along with what they are in of those horrors, by enduring the heavy burdens upon them at the time of their being ﴿humble﴾ meaning, in the utmost state of submission and throwing down their hands in humility, which is firmly established for them.

And when humility may be praiseworthy, He said: ﴿from humiliation﴾ because they then recognized their sins, and the greatness of the One whom they disobeyed was revealed to them.

And when humiliation has various forms, He depicted it in the ugliest form and said, expressing with the word 'looking' which is the touching of sight to the appearance of the seer: ﴿They look﴾ meaning their repeated looking begins ﴿from a glance﴾ meaning a movement of the eyelids ﴿hidden﴾ in which he knows humiliation because he can hardly from the lack of gazing think that he is glancing, for they steal glances as one sees a person looking at something unpleasant, and the patient looks at the sword that has been drawn against him, so he is in a state where he does not achieve a sight directed to it, but perhaps he imagines it to be greater than it is. And when He depicted their state, which is among the most dreadful of things and the most cutting to hearts, the gloating of the enemy, He said, announcing to all categories of the people of faith and warning the people of disbelief: ﴿And said﴾ meaning in that greatest moment as a means of expressing to them and reproaching, scolding, and reprimanding them ﴿Those who have believed﴾ meaning they have established this truth, whether their establishment of it is in the lowest ranks or the highest when they see them in this state, confirming the truth of their words to those who have judged by their misguidance and informing them of the joy they have in the goodness of their condition, and praise be to the One who has bestowed upon them the sense of their outcome and their fate. It may be that their words are this in the world due to what has overwhelmed their hearts of awe when they realized these admonitions: ﴿Indeed, the losers﴾ meaning those whose loss has been completed are specifically ﴿Those who have lost themselves﴾ by what has engulfed them of torment ﴿and their families﴾ by their separation from them, either in the confinement of torment if they are like them in loss or in the abode of reward if they are among the people of faith. And when He informed of their loss, between its context to terrify it, it may be that it is a context for this saying, which is more restraining for one who has a hold, for whoever permitted that he may lose and that his enemy may see his loss and show gloating over him, it is fitting that he should leave the cause leading to loss. So He said: ﴿On the Day of Resurrection﴾ meaning the day which is the day of missing the opportunity for recovery because it is for recompense, not for action, due to the loss of its condition by the loss of faith in the unseen due to the uncovering of the veil. And when this is the end of loss, His saying produced a call mentioning the cause of this specific loss, confirming for the sake of denying the oppressors of it, even if there are those who complete the words of the believers there, for the confirmation along with what informs of it in this abode from restraining the denier of the informing of what they have of the pleasure in what they saw of their bad state and the severing of their connections and their hopes that it may be cut off from them just as it is cut off from the sinners among the believers: ﴿Indeed, the oppressors﴾ meaning those firmly established in this description, they are in a state where they do not cease from acting like one walking in the dark by placing things in their wrong places ﴿In a lasting torment﴾ that does not depart from them at all, so they do not find relief from it at any time, therefore their loss is for everything.
