And when he alerted to this objection between the punishment and what is connected to it of the subtle meanings in the grandeur of the structures, he said, completing what is in that of encouragement in the form of intimidation: ﴿Or﴾ that is, or if He wills at any time He desires. And he attributed the drowning to the maidens to emphasize the intention of generality in the destruction of the passengers, so he said: ﴿He will drown them﴾ that is, He will destroy them by drowning through sending the wind and other forms of calamity until they seem after that elevation in their pit, that is, in their holes, and the depth in the water and its bottom. And the meaning of "wa baqa" has already been established in all its forms in Surah Al-Kahf, and from it that "wa baqa" is like "wa'ada" and "wajala" and "waritha" and "wubuqan" and "mawbqan": it means perished, and "mawbq" like "majlis": the destroyer, and everything that stands between two things because the "waqbah" stands between what is in it and what is other than it. And from it, the appointment is called: "mawbq", and "awbaqahu": he confined him or destroyed him.
