Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: And what are those signs? He mentioned what terrifies them from it and informs them that all that He has permitted them regarding its affairs is only by His power and choice. So He said: ﴿If He wills﴾ meaning Allah, who carried you in it on the surface of the water, a clear sign that has lost its consideration with you due to the intensity of thought about it. ﴿He calms the wind﴾ which He controls while you acknowledge that its matter is only in His hands. ﴿So they remain﴾ meaning that it causes them to remain, whether it is night or day. Perhaps He expressed it this way even though its origin is the establishment during the day because the day is the time of capability over things and it is what is awaited by every one who is in difficulty to strive in removing his hardship and facilitating his matter. ﴿Stationary﴾ meaning stable, fixed without movement. ﴿On its surface﴾ a clear stability indicated by the affirmation of the two ل’s and the opening of its first ل for all.
And when that was the place of their sincerity in calling to Allah and turning away from partners, they would say in such a situation: Be sincere, for your deities - meaning from the idols and others besides Allah - do not avail you in the sea at all. They would attribute that to partners, and with their rising to righteousness, they were like one who does not consider that at all a sign. Therefore, He emphasized His saying: ﴿Indeed, in that﴾ meaning what he mentioned regarding the state of the ships in their sailing and stillness, which none can accomplish except Allah, glorified is He, as evidenced by what is for the people, all of them, from the consensus on turning towards Him specifically and detaching from others. ﴿Signs﴾ meaning that His encompassing, glorified is He, of all attributes of perfection is a matter rooted in minds, established in the original natures, which nothing turns away from except desires, and that the nullification of matters other than Him for that is from the obviousness of a place that is not unknown.
And when they would boast about patience in the calamities of events and gratitude for every kindness, and they would blame each other for despair and ingratitude, and that would necessitate their stability in one state, if the truth was against their deities, then their returning from them in times of hardship is something that no one among the complete men who avoid disgrace and the stigma of ignorance would lean towards. And if the truth is as it is the truth for Allah, then their returning from it in times of ease after His grace upon them in saving them from hardship is not something a person of determination would do. He said, pointing to that with the two forms of exaggeration: ﴿For every patient﴾ meaning in hardship, ﴿grateful﴾ meaning in ease, even if many oppose him, and their dispute with him is great. And these are the two attributes of the sincere believer who has entrusted his determination to contemplating the signs, so he draws lessons from them and clarifies with them the eye of insight from the eye of sight.
