Commentary
And when the immediate response is to provide everything they asked for in this world as they desired, and what is present is not that, rather most of the people of Allah are constrained, the response to everything they ask for being in this abode often leads to arrogance, which leads to misery, and that results in the opposite of what is intended. He said as an excuse for His servants, and He is the Greatest King, clarifying that His response sometimes is as the hadith indicates for what they asked for, and sometimes it is by repelling something similar from calamity, and sometimes it is by delaying it to the Hereafter. And if He accepts and responds, while the case is that if He were to extend, and when this station is great due to the need to encompass their morals and attributes and what rectifies them and corrupts them, and the ability to give and withhold, He expressed with the Greatest Name saying: Allah, meaning the Greatest King who encompasses all attributes of perfection, indicating the greatness of this station: the provision for them - thus was the original, but He disliked that His specificity be that for the repentant, so it was said: for His servants, meaning all of them, the repentant among them and others, by giving them beyond their needs. They would have strived in the land, meaning they would have become wanting everything they desire, and if they did not act, they would strive to fulfill it like kings with what they have of means by every way that leads them to it, increasing killing, plundering, robbery, beating, and similar types of corruption. And it has been previously mentioned in the discussion of oppression what one can perfect in the knowledge of this place.
And when the meaning of the words is that He, glorified and exalted is He, does not extend to them that according to what they desire, He built upon it His saying, glorified and exalted is He: But He sends down for His servants from provision in a measure, meaning in a decree for them collectively and for each one of them, not exceeding the measure of His response nor diminishing it, whatever He wills of the water which is the essence of provision and the blessings with which His servants are managed, as His wisdom necessitated which He built upon the conditions of these pearls.
And when most people say to themselves: If He were to extend provision to me, I would do good, avoid evil, and rectify the utmost rectification, He said, justifying what He informed of in a style of emphasis: Indeed, He was the original: with them, but He said: with His servants, so that it would not be thought that the matter is specific to those whom He has expanded or constrained: All-Aware, All-Seeing, knowing all the apparent matters of them and their movements and transitions and their words, and their inner states, so He establishes each one in what is suitable for them from corruption and righteousness, oppression and justice, and prepares for everything from that its causes.
