Commentary
And when they were all agreeing on all that which He described of His sacred Self in this verse during hardships, some of it is a clear statement of oneness in guardianship and reviving in this abode and the ability over all things. Some of it is necessary, which is the revival by resurrection. This certainly leads to the statement that with the diversion of the saying towards addressing them, there is an indication that He, glorified and exalted is He, has brought to them every good and has made the understanding of oneness close to their minds after He created them to necessitate it in times of necessity. So whatever you agree upon regarding His matter, glorified is He, is the truth. This is the foundation of the religion upon which the creatures have united in times of necessity. No weak one among them stammered in it, nor did a mighty tyrant. He then added His saying: "And whatever you differ in" meaning, O creation, "in it of anything". This is the branches absolutely and the foundations in times of ease. "So its judgment is to Allah" meaning the One who is the Guardian, none other than Him, and He is the Powerful, none other than Him. Nothing escapes His command. So seek it from Him; you will find it in His Book, for therein is clarification of all things. If your understandings fall short of extracting it from there, then seek it in the Sunnah of His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. If that is difficult for you, then refer to the consensus of the people of His religion. If that is also lacking, then in analogy to something from that. Al-Qushayri said: These matters are the law of the Shari'ah, and their totality is from the Book of Allah. For the Book is what indicates the correctness of this totality - it has ended. And whatever you strive for based on what He has legislated for you and you have separated it by what has appeared to you regarding the wisdom of exerting effort has passed. And what is not separated among you, glorified is He, in this day, if He intends by the victory of the truth and the disgrace of the oppressor, or if He intends to delay it to the Day of Judgment. If He wills, He forgives, and if He wills, He punishes for it. So there is no judgment for anyone other than Him, neither in this world nor in the Hereafter.
And when this leads to the fact that there is no great one other than Him, and no deity except Him, He translated that by saying, addressing all: "That is Allah" meaning the One of very great rank, "the All-Encompassing of all attributes of perfection". So there is no partner for Him in anything of it in any way. "My Lord" who has no one to nurture Him other than Himself in the past, present, or future. And when that is the case, it necessarily leads to His saying: "Upon Him" meaning alone, "I have relied" meaning I have submitted all my affairs, "and to Him" meaning not to anyone other than Him, "I turn" meaning I return in repentance if I fall short in anything from the branches of His Shari'ah and I return to His Book if a matter befalls me from the affairs, so I know from it His ruling. So do you likewise; make it the judge, and you will succeed, and do not deviate from it in anything, lest you perish.
