Commentary
And when this was distressing for the compassionate towards them due to their great distance from returning, he said, alerting that if He, glorified and exalted is He, wanted closeness to them to the utmost degree, directing the saying to the manifestation of greatness, signaling the ease of that for Him: "We will show them" meaning from closeness by a promise that there is no changing in it "Our signs" meaning regarding what has of greatness in it "in the horizons" meaning the regions, the plural of ufq like 'unq and 'unaq, the second hamzah was replaced with an alif due to its being silent after a similar one, meaning what has appeared from the regions of the ships or the direction of the winds. And that is by what Allah opens from the lands by conquering their people, with the events of each one of them being a sign from the signs of prophethood, and a great witness sufficient in the validity of the message, confirming His promise, glorified is He, and what He has destroyed from its people for the victory of His prophets and messengers, and by what is in it from the wonders of creation and the strange effects and the arrangement with the difference of the rulings while their essences agree in homogeneity - and other than that from the signs by sight which He explains by the signs of hearing.
And when faith in the unseen is what is considered, and everything that is closer to it is closer to perfection, and the signs of the horizons are closer to that, He began with them. Then He said: ﴿And in themselves﴾, meaning from the opening of Makkah and what befell them from years of famine and the story of Abu Basir and similar matters. And He distinguishes for them with that what is in the human soul from the marvelous signs and wonders of creation and the peculiarities of craftsmanship, and what is in it from indications of occurrence and the differences of attributes, and other than that from the evident witnesses that correspond to what you strike of examples and rational proofs when considering words and actions. And with what is in the land of the Arabs from the visible signs of negation after their hastening to Him and their adherence to Him and the affirmation of monotheism among all of them after their distancing from Him and their fighting against the one who calls to Him. And He has clarified, glorified and exalted is He, in this from the signs of the horizons in the verse (p-226) ﴿Are you indeed disbelieving in the One who created the earth in two days﴾ [Fussilat: 9] and what is similar to it, and in the souls in the verses ﴿Say: I have warned you of a punishment like the punishment of 'Aad and Thamud﴾ [Fussilat: 13] and those after them, and similar to it, and the verses ﴿Man does not tire of praying for good﴾ [Fussilat: 49] to its end, indicating that man's affair is built upon ignorance and incapacity. So, most of what he imagines is not as he has imagined it. Therefore, he must reflect on the Book of his Lord and ponder it - and Allah knows best. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: The inference from actions to their doer is clear and a manifest path. And actions are of two kinds: one is the horizons, which is the totality of the world, and the second is the souls. For indeed, whoever knows himself knows his Lord, meaning whoever knows his spirit and its being as a substance that acts in the body with the action of management, and knows its attributes, that it is everlasting without the body, does not need the body for its existence, but rather the body is in need of it. And that it is the place of knowledge. So whoever knows such knowledge knows his Lord and His attributes of oneness, knowledge, power, will, and His management in the totality of the world, meaning that His existence, exalted is He, is distinct from the existence of others.
And when the estimation was: And we continue to be the remnants of that thing in the effect of something, he added to it his saying: ﴿Until it becomes clear to them﴾ the ultimate clarity by itself without the exertion of thought ﴿that it﴾ meaning the Qur'an ﴿is the truth﴾ complete in its truthfulness that corresponds with the realities (p-227) and is confirmed by the transient states and the actions. So they gather around it and turn to it with all their hearts, and no one in the Arabian Peninsula rejects it, nor do two of them differ about it. Then they spread throughout the regions of the earth, in its length and breadth, and they prevail over all religions, and they eradicate the people of disbelief in all countries, and every tyranny will cease. Thus, their emergence at this time and the weakness of the believers, after the reason for their increase from disbelief, is a lesson for them and for all who come after them that necessitates steadfastness in the places of earthquakes, knowing that Allah has established His custom that falsehood has a wind that blows and then calms, and a state that appears and then fades, and a force that roams and then changes.
And when this saying is a reminder that in the horizons and in the souls are visible signs that are read by those of insight with insights, and contemplated with the eyes of the secrets, a matter that description cannot encompass, it was a motivator for the purification of thoughts for contemplation and consideration, and for standing on some of what is in that from the subtleties of secrets, as if it were said: Did they not see with their minds what is in that from the evidence that the Qur'an is from Allah, so it suffices them from the testimony of something outside of themselves? He added to it his saying: ﴿Or is it not enough﴾ and he emphasized by including the preposition, and he affirmed the subject by saying, confirming with the 'ba' and establishing that it is the subject, diverting the saying (p-228) to the description of benevolence, indicating kindness towards them by returning them to it without them committing what necessitates their punishment and destruction and their eradication: ﴿By your Lord﴾ meaning the one who is benevolent to you with this miraculous statement for humans and jinn as a testimony that it is from Him ﴿that﴾ meaning or is it not enough the testimony of your Lord that ﴿He is a witness over all things﴾ nothing of the things is hidden from Him, neither this Qur'an nor anything else. And He has testified for you in it with its miraculous nature to all of creation with all that its verses contain, and its words express. In it is the greatest good news of the completion of the religion and its dominance over the aggressors. This is because everyone finds within themselves that if they want the establishment of a right that is denied by the one who has the right, from the witnesses, what confirms their words in it and their reaching it to him, he will be assured and not disturbed by denial, knowing that his right must appear and disgrace his opponent and overpower him. And in this is an admonition for everyone who is upon the truth and does not find someone to assist him in its emergence, for Allah is his witness, so his matter must appear. So rely upon Allah, for indeed you are upon the clear truth.
