And when he confirmed their ignorance, he followed it with their inability and said: ﴿And they were led astray﴾ meaning they went away, deviated, and disappeared, and it was hidden ﴿from them﴾. And since their deities were either from those who do not understand, like the idols, or are in the category of that due to their lack of action in reality, he expressed about them with the tool of what does not understand and said: ﴿What they used to﴾ meaning always ﴿invoke﴾ at all times as a matter of habit.

And since their invocation to them was not encompassing for the time before, he included the preposition and said: ﴿Before﴾. So they do not see it as a favor, let alone that they find its benefit and receive it. (p-216) It is as if they were, due to their deep-rooted ignorance and bad nature, expecting to attain them so that they would intercede for them. Therefore, he expressed with the notion of assumption in his saying: ﴿And they assumed﴾ meaning in that situation ﴿that they have﴾. And he emphasized the negation by including the preposition with the delayed subject and said: ﴿No escape﴾ meaning no refuge, shelter, or place of safety.
