And when he mentioned the enemies and their companions as a warning, he followed it with the mention of the allies and their supporters as a glad tidings. He said, clarifying their condition which is open to rejection and its fruits, in response to whoever asks about them, affirming for the sake of denying the obstinate: "Indeed, those..." Abu Hayyan said: Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, said: It was revealed concerning Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him and grant him peace.
They said, meaning a true saying, submitting to it with their hearts and speaking it with their tongues, confirming the call of Allah in the abode of this world, humbling themselves where humility benefits, combining between the foundation which is knowledge and belief, and the structure which is good deeds through words and actions upon righteousness. For the essence of the spiritual perfections is a certain reform and good deeds. They know the truth for its own sake and the good to act for it. The head of the certain knowledge and its chief is the knowledge of Allah. The head of the good deeds is steadfastness upon the limit of moderation, without leaning towards excess or negligence: "Our Lord," meaning the Benefactor towards us, "Allah," the One who is exclusively characterized by majesty and honor, without partner. And since steadfastness upon monotheism and its affirmations until death is a matter of high rank that cannot be attained except by the success of the One of glory and honor, He indicated it with a tool of delay, saying: "Then they were steadfast." They sought and established the foundation with faith in all the messengers and all the books, and they did not associate with Him any idol, nor a statue, nor a human, nor an angel, nor a planet, nor anything else in worship or showing off. They acted in what pleases Him and avoided all that angers Him, even if time was prolonged, in compliance with what He commanded at the beginning of the surah in His saying: "Indeed, your God is one God, so be steadfast towards Him" [Fussilat: 6]. So whoever has the foundation of steadfastness in monotheism is safe from the Fire with eternity, and whoever has the perfection of steadfastness in the fundamentals and branches is safe from the warning. "They descend" gradually upon them from the time the spirit is blown into them until they die, then until they enter Paradise, inwardly and outwardly. "The angels" with support in all that befalls them, so the angelic states rise above their human attributes and animal desires, which diminish in its presence, and their mirrors shine. Then He explained what they support them with and interpreted it, saying: "Do not fear," meaning from anything like it that frightens, as if they affirm that in their hearts. "And do not grieve," meaning over anything that has passed you, for what has been granted to you is better than it. Your ultimate times are in it, rather they are all spirit and comfort, so no beloved will escape them because of that, nor will any disliked thing reach them. "And rejoice," meaning fill your hearts with joy, the effect of which appears on your faces with the radiance of the countenance and the blessing of the entire body. "With the Paradise which you were," meaning a great being upon the tongues of the messengers, "promised," meaning that is renewed for you every time with the books and the messengers. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: They are given glad tidings in three places: at death, in the grave, and on the Day of Resurrection - ended. And this is a transition to the true speech and what preceded it, indicating that they will do with it what I have translated.
