Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, conveyed the severity of His punishment, He increased in magnifying and favoring, out of kindness for whoever He wanted to guide among His servants and to establish proof against others. He said: (p-180) ﴿That﴾ meaning: the truly great and severe punishment ﴿is a recompense﴾. And since the enmity of those who cannot be endured is an affair of greater magnitude, He pointed that out by diverting the speech from its manifestation to something greater than it, saying: ﴿The enemies of Allah﴾ meaning: the greatest King. This is because they would not act below the worst except out of inability to do so, as their nature necessitates that. He clarified this by saying: ﴿The Fire﴾ and detailed some of what is in it by saying: ﴿For them in it﴾ meaning: the Fire ﴿is the abode of eternity﴾ meaning: the place that surrounds them, encircling them without any knowledge of a corner or otherwise that would indicate a specific location from it, along with indicating permanence and necessity and the absence of release. Or it is in the abstract meaning: it is for them an abode of eternity just as they had in this world an abode of joy, meaning that it was for them in itself a place of amusement and deception.

And when they were persistent in their actions for which they deserved this punishment, their persistence prevented their release from it, He further beautified His saying: ﴿A recompense﴾ meaning: in accordance with ﴿what they had earned﴾ meaning: by nature and disposition. And He returned the speech to the manifestation of the greatness that necessitates punishment, saying: ﴿By Our signs﴾ meaning: regarding what they have of greatness ﴿they deny﴾ meaning: they reject out of stubbornness without regard for its exaltedness in itself or its exaltedness in relation to us. Therefore, due to their denial, they would proceed to what no sane person would approve of, such as amusement and others.
