Commentary

And when they deserved this punishment, He caused it to be confirmed for their denial by His saying, the Most High: ﴿So We will surely make them taste﴾. And He made clear in the place of omission, generalizing by description, saying: ﴿Those who disbelieved﴾, meaning: these and others ﴿a severe punishment﴾ in this world by deprivation and what follows it of forms of humiliation, and in the Hereafter by the fires. ﴿And We will surely recompense them﴾, meaning: for their deeds. And when the one who is capable of the severest is capable of what is less than it, He said: ﴿Worse﴾, meaning: the punishment of the worst deed ﴿that they were﴾ with what is for them like instincts ﴿doing﴾, being persistent in it.
