And when he informed them of their loss, he indicated it by what the context guided to in his estimation from my saying: 'So they turned away' - meaning: these Arabs - and they said: 'This was the original, but he said it as a warning regarding the description that necessitated their turning away: 'And those who disbelieved' - meaning: they concealed what their minds indicated to them of the truth - 'Do not listen' - meaning: anything of absolute hearing - 'to this Qur'an' specifically by indication, in order to avoid it from other ancient books like the Torah. Al-Qushayri said: Because it overwhelms hearts and steals minds, and everyone who listens to it inclines towards it. 'And engage in nonsense' - meaning: they babbled - from laghiya - with the kasra it means to be void - with the fathah - it means to speak of what has no benefit in it. 'In it' - meaning: make it a context for nonsense by increasing from myths, idle talk, and nonsense with whistling and clapping, meaning: whistling and clapping, and others during its recitation, so that the one who follows it may fall into forgetfulness and error. Al-Qushayri said: They said that without knowing that whoever illuminated his heart with faith, supported it with understanding, and endowed it with insight, and was unveiled by hearing the secret from the unseen, he is the one who hears and believes. And the one who is in the darkness of his ignorance, faith does not enter his heart, nor does hearing touch his secret.

'Perhaps you will prevail' - meaning: let your state be like that of one who is hoped for to prevail and achieve his desire, that someone may incline towards him, or be silent, or forget what he was saying. And this indicates that they are aware that whoever hears it and has no inclination towards it, he will lean towards it and fully embrace it. And they have exposed themselves with this an exposure like no other, and that is because they limited themselves in that they could bring something similar to it to be counted as victorious, but they found nothing to hope for victory with except whistling and clapping and similar nonsense in opposition to what has risen from the highest peaks of speech to where there is no hope or desire. So what they brought does not yield a meaning other than that they are incapable of opposition, and they are cut off by the fact that whenever they bring something from it, they are exposed. And everyone who has heard them has concluded that they are defeated.
