Commentary
And when he clarified their humiliation by the restraint, he clarified its goals and said: ﴿Until when﴾. And he emphasized the words for their denial of its content by adding the negation so that its conjunction with the affirmation would negate the opposite, thus it would convey the utmost strength of the content of the report in its realization, its permanence, and its connection with the testimony at once. He said: ﴿They did not come to it﴾, meaning: the Fire which they used to [thereby] deny. ﴿It witnessed against them﴾ when they were piled up in it, some upon others. And when it was in the context of intimidation, and the detail was more terrifying, he said: ﴿Their hearing﴾ he mentioned it individually due to the closeness of the people in it. ﴿And their eyes﴾ is plural due to the great disparity in it. ﴿And their skins with what﴾ and he established the existence as a clarification that they were sealed upon what necessitated for them the Fire from the burdens. He said: ﴿They used to do﴾, meaning: they renewed their action, continuing upon it. It is as if these limbs are saying at that time, establishing the conclusive proof: O beings and those present from mankind, angels, and jinn, know that my companion was doing such and such with persistence, thus he deserved the Fire, and the Compeller became angry - then he would be cast into it.
