Commentary
And when this amount of knowledge necessitates submission to every good of monotheism and others, and turning towards the truth in every matter, the one who persists in turning away from it before being admonished by it is as if he has renewed a turning away that is different from his first turning away. He explained some of his saying ﴿But most of them turned away﴾ [Fussilat: 4] ﴿And if they turn away﴾ meaning: they continue in their turning away, or others turn away from accepting what you have brought them of the reminder after this clear statement in these verses which indicate monotheism, knowledge, power, and other attributes of perfection in the most complete manner. ﴿Say﴾ meaning: to them: Indeed, you have previously followed their path in obstinacy. So if you refuse except to persist, we will include you with them like their examples, which is the meaning of ﴿I have warned you of a thunderbolt﴾ meaning: the occurrence of a thunderbolt prepared for whoever has had the matter revealed to him and then obstinates. For the duty of the proof has been completed in the most complete ways. Al-Baghawi and Ibn al-Jawzi said: and the destructive thunderbolt is from everything - it has ended. And the result is that it is a severe punishment, as if in its severity it is a thunderbolt.
And when the warning with what is easy to observe like it is more impactful on the soul, He said: ﴿Like the thunderbolt of 'Aad and Thamud﴾ meaning: those whose dwellings you see and you are amazed by their traces. And He justified the occurrence of that [with them] by saying:
