12So He accomplished them as seven skies in two days, and settled in every sky its (due) thing. And We have decorated the closest sky with lamps, and protected it properly. All this is the determination of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.

Commentary

﴿So He decreed them﴾ meaning: He created them and fashioned them while they were numbered ﴿seven heavens﴾ a creation that is effective, like a decree, with no failure [in it] ﴿in two days﴾ meaning: Thursday and Friday, when He calculated the measure that pertains to them from creation in the six days during which all that exists was created. And what is between them was in the measure that pertains to one of the earth and its provisions, not exceeding the duration of either of them nor decreasing. So what pertains to them would be one third of the total. Ibn Jarir said: And Friday was named so because Allah, exalted is He, gathered in it the creation of the heavens and the earth. This means He completed and finished that.

﴿And He inspired﴾ meaning: He cast in a hidden way and a decisive strong command (p-157) ﴿in every heaven its command﴾ meaning: the command by which He arranged it and arranged its benefits with a precise system that does not falter, and a binding control [that does not dissolve].

And when it was general, He specified what pertains to us as an indication of our honor. So He said, directing the words to the manifestation of greatness, as a reminder of what is in this verse of greatness: ﴿And We adorned﴾ meaning: with what we have of greatness ﴿the nearest heaven﴾ meaning: the one closest to you for your sake ﴿with lamps﴾ from the brilliance of the stars, and its edges do not negate that it may be in something else that is higher than it. And the context indicates that what is intended is: an adornment “and We preserved it with a preservation” from the devils.

So the verse is from the intertwining: the verb of preservation is omitted by the indication of the source, and the source of adornment is indicated by what it implies from its action.

And when this was a remarkable matter, He indicated its greatness by saying, directing the speech to the attributes of might and knowledge, informing that they are the foundation of greatness and its essence: ﴿That﴾ [meaning]: the lofty matter and the wondrous status ﴿the decree of the Mighty﴾ who is not overcome by anything while He overcomes everything ﴿the All-Knowing﴾ who encompasses knowledge of everything. And as He has decreed, glorified and exalted is He, that by His might and knowledge, it has been decided that nothing grants eternal might except what He has legislated from knowledge. And in His conclusion with the two attributes is a good tidings for the nation that was addressed by them that He will grant them from His might and knowledge, especially through the gift and what resembles it from the natures and others, what no nation has been granted before them. [And the secret of His creation, glorified is He, is in a period and not in a moment, and He made it six, no less and no more, for if He had created it in a moment, that would have been a semblance for those who say: He is an agent by essence and not by choice. Thus, the situation necessitated a number, then the situation necessitated that it be six because it is the first number that indicates completeness, as it is a complete number like its walls, which do not exceed it nor diminish from it. This indicates that the agent has the attributes of completeness and the qualities of perfection and exaltation, and He did not create it in a number less than that because it is deficient. And He created the earth in two days because two is a number that indicates singularity; it leads the servants to monotheism. And He made the two days repeated considering the essence and the benefits, signaling what occurs in it from disobedience by associating partners, which is duality and falsehood. And He did not repeat in the heavens because its signs are more indicative of monotheism, and what has occurred from its people does not indicate a warning. And for the creation of it in less than the duration of the earth - although it is a larger body and a more wondrous creation and a more perfect form - is more indicative of action by choice with the wonders of wisdom and the strange great secrets.]
