Commentary
And when the heavens were greater than the earth in themselves by the light of their construction and their vastness, and their adornment and the rotation of their orbits and their elevation, He indicated this by the expression of the tool of delay, and the word of 'establishment' and the preposition indicating great concern, so He said: ﴿Then He established﴾ meaning: He intended an intention which is the intention that culminates in His intention ﴿towards the heaven while it is﴾ meaning: while it is ﴿smoke﴾ after He had split it from the earth. They said: That smoke was the vapor of water, so it is borrowed from the height of fire, and it is a figurative comparison. The heaven is prior in smokiness to the earth, just as the male is prior to the female. Then the earth was created after the shaping of the heaven and its completion. The female of the earth was made to be flat and was leveled for the mention of the heaven. Ibn Burjan said: So whoever believes that the heaven was first in creation and completion, and the earth after it in creation and order, and the days of creation are two days for the creation of the earth and two days for the leveling of the heaven after it had been smoke, and two days for the completion of the benefits, so the numbers intermingled due to the intermingling of the actions. ﴿So He said to it﴾ meaning: after this establishment ﴿and to the earth﴾ after its creation and before its flattening: ﴿Come forth﴾ meaning: come forth and approach as two equal entities to what I have decreed for you and intended from you in bringing forth the benefits from the waters, plants, and minerals, and others, placing the source in the position of the state in exaggeration, so He said: ﴿Willingly or unwillingly﴾ meaning: willingly or unwillingly in bringing forth what I have entrusted to you at its times and according to what is appropriate of its measures and forms, willingly in a state of subjugation, not obligation. ﴿They said: We have come willingly﴾ meaning: we are here, and what is between us is what we have.
And when He made them the place of address which is for the rational beings and the speaking, He said, gathering them both considering their individuals and what is in them, the gathering of those who understand: ﴿Willingly﴾ meaning: in all that You have decreed for us, we do not carry anything of that, rather we expend it according to what You have commanded, we do not change nor alter, and that is their offering of the trust, and the absence of carrying it, and the gathering of the matter for them in the report does not indicate their gathering in time, rather the saying to them may be successive.
