Commentary
And when disbelief in the unseen is a cause for the rejection of faith at the time of witnessing, He said: ﴿So it was not﴾ meaning: it was not valid and was not accepted in any way, because there is no existence that supports that nor at the slightest degrees of existence. He indicated by saying 'was' that this is a settled matter and a continuous state for every nation, not specific to the one who narrates about them and those who preceded them. By omitting the letter 'lam' from the word, it indicates that they have persisted in their delicacy in affirming faith and reiterating it and declaring it in its release and its allowance. The time is tight and the opportunity is limited, and the impending event has approached, and there is no one to uncover it except Allah. So they would not fulfill what was required of them due to the passing of time. ﴿Their faith will not benefit them﴾ meaning: its benefit will be renewed for them after that, because it is a faith of compulsion and necessity, not a faith of willingness and choice. ﴿When they saw﴾ [and] the place of the implicit has been revealed, increasing in intimidation. So He said: ﴿Our punishment﴾ because faith cannot be realized or conceived except with the unseen. As for at the time of witnessing, it has revealed his inner self that his reality and form have passed. So if they were returned, they would return, and if punishment came to them after that, they would submit. For this reason, Allah, the Exalted, said, redirecting the statement to the name that necessitates the blending of wisdom with greatness: ﴿The way of Allah﴾ meaning: the greatest king who encompasses knowledge and power has established that in every age as a tradition. For this reason, He said: ﴿Which has passed among His servants﴾ that faith after the unveiling of the veil is not accepted. And every nation that denied the messengers was destroyed, and everyone who was called to the proposed faith but did not believe was punished. He established it as a tradition and enforced it as a determination, so there is no alternative for it. Thus, the believers were successful at that time ﴿And the disbelievers lost﴾ meaning: they perished or it was realized and made clear that they lost. And when the place does not cease to be associated with time, its circumstance was borrowed for it to indicate the utmost establishment, and it was said: ﴿There﴾ meaning: at that great time of significance. ﴿The disbelievers﴾ meaning: those deeply rooted in this description, so there is no separation between them and it. And the end has been intertwined with what has been clarified of the completeness of might and the fullness of power and the comprehensiveness of knowledge regarding what He has arranged of the causes of guidance and misguidance, misery and happiness, salvation and destruction, with its beginning being a connection. And the beginning and the end have surrounded the clarification of that along with what the middle has also included of the greatest connection. So glorified is He whose revelation this is, and blessed is His name, and exalted is His majesty, and there is no deity except Him, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah. O Lord, make it easy, O Generous.
