Commentary
So when their stubbornness, harshness, and strength in their obstinacy became established, it became clear how ignorant they were of their humiliation when what was destined for them became apparent. The weight of the impending punishment for the forces was due, and what they had firmly bound from their evil was released. He said, clarifying what he had summarized of the truth, attributing it to a manifestation of greatness as a warning: ﴿So when they saw﴾ meaning: they witnessed ﴿Our might﴾ meaning: Our severe punishment, due to its greatness which brought it closer to us and its emergence from us. ﴿They said, 'We have believed in Allah'﴾ meaning: the One who has the sources of greatness, the strongholds of honor, and the authority of the word, as it became evident to us in this might without any confusion or ambiguity. They confirmed this, denying what they had been in [of polytheism] by saying: ﴿Alone﴾ and it indicated the dissolution of their bonds and the weakening of their forces by the increase of clarity in their saying: ﴿And we have disbelieved in what we were﴾ meaning: by nature and disposition ﴿polytheists﴾ because we knew that nothing can avail against Allah.
