Commentary
And when Allah, glorified and exalted is He, divided for him the state of their affliction or his passing away, and it remained from what was most pleasing to his eyes and most comforting to his heart that He would show them in his life a sign that would compel them to believe and lead them to agreement and submission, so that the dispute would cease with good following, as happened with the people of Yunus, blessings and peace be upon him. He said, referring to what you determine in explaining the matter with patience, 'Indeed, We have sent you to them and We will certainly carry out Our command concerning them.' As for you, there is nothing upon you except the conveying of the message: 'And indeed, We have sent.' That is, according to what We have of greatness, 'messengers,' meaning, in abundance.
And when the sending is only in some of the past time, and although the reaching of the message of each one to those after him necessitates the withdrawal of the ruling of his message until the coming of the messenger who follows him, the connector established for the will of the truth said: ﴿Before you﴾ meaning: to their nations so that they may convey to us what We commanded them with: ﴿Among them are those We have related to you﴾ meaning: with what We have of encompassing knowledge ﴿About you﴾ meaning: their news and the news of their nations ﴿And among them are those We did not relate to you﴾ and although We have complete knowledge and full ability ﴿About you﴾ neither their news nor the news of their nations nor did We mention them to you by their names ﴿And what﴾ meaning: We sent them while the case is that there was not ﴿For a messenger﴾ originally ﴿To come with a sign﴾ meaning: compelling or non-compelling of what the messenger requests hastening for the following of his people to him, or a suggestion from his people to him or other than that of what they argue with their people or submit to him or yield, and he diverted the speech from the apparent meaning indicating to the compulsion to what is in it - with humiliation - honor, so he said: ﴿Except by the permission of Allah﴾ meaning: by His command and enabling, for indeed He has encompassing knowledge of everything, so nothing escapes His command. If He does not permit that, they are pleased, submit, be patient, and hold back. And if He permits something of that, whether it be punishment or a compelling sign or other than that, what He permitted comes to them ﴿So when it comes﴾ and the matter increases in magnitude for the increase of fear and hope by the manifestation without concealment, so he said: ﴿The command of Allah﴾ meaning: encompassing all things in power and knowledge, and His command: what He has promised of punishment upon obstinacy after responding to the suggestion, and of the Day of Resurrection and what is in it. The repetition of the greatest name is for the glorification of the station by bringing to mind what He has of attributes of majesty and honor, and for the establishment of what He intended and its necessity, He expressed it by (the decree), so he said indicating by the passive form with utmost ease: ﴿It has been decreed﴾ meaning: by His command in the easiest and simplest way ﴿With the truth﴾ meaning: the established matter which has preceded the promise of it and has ruled its establishment from the destruction of some people and the salvation of others or the faith of a people and the disbelief of others - and all of this is what He, glorified is He, has enacted of His ancient tradition with its establishment. As for the favor of delaying and prolonging with blessings, it is only before the response to the suggestions. The evidence that this is from the intent of the verse is what comes from His saying: ﴿So their faith did not benefit them when they saw Our punishment﴾ [Ghafir: 85] and what is similar to it ﴿And he lost﴾ meaning: he perished or it was realized and made clear by observation that he lost ﴿There﴾ meaning: at that great time by the greatness of what We revealed in it, a place of time borrowed for the time, signaling the utmost stability and establishment in loss as the sitting one is established. ﴿The falsifiers﴾ meaning: those attributed to preferring falsehood over truth, either by suggesting signs while providing them with what suffices them from it and calling it magic or otherwise, either by their ease in returning from what they are in of obstinacy without yielding or by destruction, or by refuting the arguments and ruling against them with defeat then the fire, even after a while. And from this verse, He, glorified is He, took in responding to the section of the surah at its beginning, so this verse is looking to His saying, the Exalted: ﴿And every nation intended to seize their messenger﴾ [Ghafir: 5] ﴿And it was not for a messenger to come with a sign﴾ to ﴿And they argued with falsehood﴾ [Ghafir: 5] and ﴿Did they not travel in the land﴾ [Ghafir: 82] to ﴿So I seized them, so how was My punishment﴾ [Ghafir: 5] and this and what follows it from what it includes of wisdom and power to the first three verses.
