Commentary
And when he knew from this that there is no burden upon him in anything of the matters observed in themselves and in the horizons, he produced astonishment at their state for the one who has sharp understanding and keen insight. He made that from His manifest signs and His overpowering ability. Therefore, he said, directing the address to the highest of morals, for the condemnation of arguing with falsehood is for the purpose of this surah: ﴿Did you not see﴾, meaning: O the most radiant of people in heart and the purest of them in mind. Then he clarified after them with the tool of finality, saying: ﴿to those who argue﴾, meaning: with falsehood. And he alerted to what is in these verses of His greatness, which has no end, by repeating the comprehensive name, saying: ﴿in the signs of Allah﴾, meaning: the Greatest King.
﴿How﴾, meaning: and how, and from what aspect ﴿are they turned away﴾ from the clear and true signs that were previously established by the original nature in the roots of their hearts? So there is no argument they present, nor punishment they bring upon themselves, for indeed, He, glorified and exalted is He, led them - as Ibn Burjan said - with the chains of His overpowering, forged from their purest resolutions and their desires, from the reality of their selves to the disgrace of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter. He separated what they argued about, describing them with what increases the astonishment at the severity of their ignorance and the magnitude of their blindness, saying:
