Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, commanded what indicated His deserving of it, He produced certainly His saying: ﴿Say﴾, meaning: to those who argue with you about the Oneness and Resurrection, in response to their denial with emphasis: ﴿Indeed, I have been forbidden﴾, meaning: by one who has no forbiddance other than Him, a general prohibition by the proofs of reason, and a specific prohibition by the evidences of transmission: ﴿to worship﴾. And when they qualified them for the highest ranks, He expressed about them the loosening of the reins by His saying: ﴿those whom you call upon﴾, meaning: they qualify them to be called upon, and it indicated their lowliness by His saying, the Most High: ﴿besides Allah﴾, meaning: the One who has all perfection. And it indicated that he was not one who worshipped before the Resurrection by the law of anyone by His saying: ﴿When the clear proofs came to me﴾, meaning: the very clear arguments from the evidences of reason and transmission are evident. [And He turned the saying to the attribute of grace, indicating that just as He deserves to be singled out in worship for His essence, He deserves it in gratitude for His grace, so He said]: ﴿from my Lord﴾, meaning: the One who nurtures me with a specific nurturing that is higher than the nurturing of every other creature besides me. Therefore, I worship Him with a worship that surpasses the worship of every worshipper.
And when He informed about what he should refrain from, He followed it with the command of what he should adorn himself with, saying: ﴿And I have been commanded to submit﴾, meaning: to renew my complete submission at all times continuously ﴿to the Lord of the worlds﴾, because everything besides Him is created, so turning to it is a loss. And if he, blessings and peace be upon him, forbade that and commanded this because the one who commands and forbids is his Lord, for He is the Lord of all things, then surely others are partners with Him in that.
