Commentary
And when it was established that He, glorified is He, is our Lord alone, and that the one who claims lordship other than Him is obstinate, because He, glorified is He, is distinguished by His actions in which no one shares with Him, this was indicated in a way firmly rooted in the natures, its correctness is clear in the minds, like the one who justifies naming this denial as ingratitude. He said, indicating the horizons after the indication of what arose from them of the two realms, and he delayed this because, while it is the clearest reason due to the stability of the earth and the celestial nature of the sky for that, by what occurred in it from the differences. He said: "Allah" meaning: the One who has complete encompassing knowledge of everything. "The One who made" meaning: alone, "for you the earth" meaning: while it is a spread-out bed, "a resting place" while it is at the utmost heaviness, and there is no holder for it except His power. "And the sky" in its height and vastness while it is celestial spheres with stars that move throughout time, from which night and day, darkness and light arise. "A structure" like a dome without a supporting pillar. It is known to everyone with a mind that heavy bodies by their nature necessitate some of them to be pressed against each other, so nothing prevents some of them from falling upon each other except by force and compulsion. The verse from the intertwining: mentioning the resting place first is evidence of the rotation secondly, and the structure secondly is evidence of the bed first.
And when He mentioned the dwelling, He mentioned the dweller, indicating that He is the doer in everything by His choice and the completeness of His power by forming man in a form that resembles the form of none of the animals. He differentiated between the individuals in the shape of that form in ways that are hardly defined in themselves, and none of them resembles the other, and in the horizons there is nothing that resembles it; it is impossible to depict it upon him. He said: "And He formed you" and the formation is not according to a single system except by the power of a capable One with complete power who is a chooser, not as the people of natures say.
"So He made your forms good" in shapes and conditions while they are the best of forms; there is nothing in existence that resembles them, and there is no form that resembles the other to support the impression of its formation to Him. It is established with certainty that He is the Form-giver, glorified is He, without a likeness, just as He is the One who created all that exists likewise.
And when he mentioned the dwelling and the dweller, he mentioned what is needed for the duration of the dwelling. He said: "And He provided for you from the good things." These are the desirable provisions suitable for beneficial natures in a way that there is no need accompanying it. There is no evidence more indicative of the completeness of [knowledge] and the comprehensiveness of ability and the existence of choice than this arrangement in preserving the dwelling and the roof and managing what sustains life in a way that is sufficient for the dweller from all aspects over the passing of years and the succession of times. And from the dweller - although it is a very small piece of the surface of the earth - He spread them into branches that the earth cannot contain. So He arranged with His wisdom, the vastness of His knowledge, and His ability, a management that expanded the earth for them, and He provided for them with sustenance, as narrated by Imam [Ahmad] in the book of "Zuhd" from Al-Hasan, who said: "When Allah created Adam, blessings and peace be upon him, and his offspring, the angels said: 'The earth cannot contain them.' He said: 'Then I will make death.' They said: 'Then they will not enjoy life.' He said: 'Then I will make hope.'
And when this clearly indicated uniqueness, he said in terms of production: "That is you" meaning: the exalted in degrees, "Allah" meaning: the owner of all dominion. [And He indicated to them what has passed by their upbringing and what is in it of exquisite craftsmanship, saying]: "Your Lord" [meaning]: no one but Him. And when this evidence provided a nurturing that is unmatched, indicating the encompassing of knowledge and the completeness of ability, for it is in a way that there is no need accompanying it with its goodness and stability (p-107) that arises from it, there must be His saying: "So blessed is" meaning: He has established a great establishment with prosperity, goodness, and the best of assistance and abundance. "Allah" [meaning]: the One who is exclusive to perfection. [And the discourse elevated and its clarification became great for the indication, saying]: "Lord of the worlds" all of you and others. Then he indicated what the evidence has provided, reasoning with His saying:
