Commentary
And when this context revealed that this diversion is something no sane person would undertake, it was as if it was said: Has this happened to anyone other than these? It was answered by saying: ﴿Thus﴾ meaning: like this strange diversion, far from the ways of the rational. ﴿It is diverted﴾ meaning: it is diverted in a bad way - he built it for the passive form as an indication of the completeness of his ability over it by every means possible, and because he is astonished by it. ﴿Those who were﴾ naturally inclined to deny ﴿the signs of Allah﴾ meaning: the One of majesty and beauty, ﴿they deny﴾ meaning: they reject out of stubbornness and arrogance. This indicates that everyone who is arrogant about a truth and denies it while knowing it will be punished by the distortion of the heart and the reversal of understanding, so that diversion from the faces of the proofs to their backs becomes a habit for him, such that he dies as a disbeliever if Allah does not grant him mercy from Himself.
