Commentary
And when the matter of engaging in these two times is a matter of engaging in others, it is more appropriate. For the beginning of the day is the time for engaging in work and focusing on starting and completing. And its end is the time for preparing for rest and the midday nap, with eating and drinking and what follows them. This necessitated engaging away from the enemies of the religion primarily. And this was a matter that is difficult for the souls. He explained it with what necessitates perseverance in good deeds and turning away from them, for their abandonment is a matter that has been settled. He said, explaining the perseverance in obedience: "Indeed, those who argue"; meaning: they oppose with enmity the transfer of the [people of] this religion from it to what they are upon of falsehood. And he pointed to the majesty that indicates the end of greatness, minimizing their affair, saying: "in the signs of Allah"; meaning: the Greatest King that indicates the completeness of His power, which necessitates His power over resurrection, in which remembering it is the rectification of religion and the world. "Without any authority"; meaning: a matter that is compelling and a clear proof. "They have come to them"; meaning: what "is in their chests" with their turning away from the straight path. And mentioning the chests instead of the hearts indicates the greatness of the arrogance, as it has filled the hearts and overflowed from them until it occupied the chests, which are their abodes. "Except arrogance"; meaning: against following the truth while the light of it is shining and its brilliance is rising, wanting to extinguish it or hide it. And arrogance is the desire for advancement, greatness, and leadership, and for the one wanting that to be above everyone. "They will not reach it"; meaning: they will not reach the full implication of it from abolishing the religion, out of arrogance from being under its commands. They will not reach that in any way. And there must be the religion appearing with the victory of the Messenger and those who follow him from the believers over the people of the Book, the polytheists, and others among the types of disbelievers. Then they will be resurrected, and their enemies will be the lowest of the low, diminished and humiliated.
And when it became clear who was at the beginning of this speech and at its end, explicitly and implicitly, with what the style of the speech of the Omnipotent has conveyed to the most general of those who could come to mind, that He, exalted is He, described Himself at the beginning of the Surah as the One who prevails over everything, and nothing prevails over Him. And that which is with them is merely the desire for them to be exalted and victorious, which causes His saying, exalted is He: "So seek refuge"; meaning: seek protection "with Allah"; the One who encompasses everything from the evil of their arrogance, just as Moses, peace be upon him, sought refuge with Him to fulfill for you what He promised you, just as He fulfilled for him. Then He explained that with His saying: "Indeed, He"; meaning: regarding what He has of the depths, "He"; meaning: alone, "is the Hearing" of all that can be heard. And when the context was for seeking refuge from the devils of mankind, who have the apparent and hidden plots, He concluded with His saying: "the Seeing"; the One who is suitable for sight and insight, encompassing the perceived and the known. And He concluded the two verses of Al-A'raf and Fussilat, which preceded them, with the whispering of the devil, which are the insinuations and hidden thoughts, with "the Knowing."
