Commentary
And when this was from the news of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, and Fir'aun, it was a very strange matter. Few know it as it is, because it is from hidden knowledge. He indicated to that by His saying: "And when". That is: mention to them this which We have informed you of, from what was in the ancient times. And there is no way for them to reach it except from Us, because they know for certain that you have never sat with a scholar at all. And mention to them what will be in the coming time when "they argue". That is: those whom We punish "in the Fire". That is: they will dispute in it, their followers and their leaders, with what will not benefit them: "Then the weak will say". That is: the followers "to those who were arrogant". That is: they sought to be great. And when they are in the severity of what they are in, each one of them will disown his companion. They confirmed their saying: "Indeed, we were for you". That is: without others "followers". That is: followers, so you were arrogant over the people because of us. And according to the Basri scholars, it is one [like a camel], and it can be plural like the servants, the plural of servant. And perhaps he expressed it to indicate that they [were] in great obedience to them as if they were of one heart. And when the great one protects his follower, they caused their question by saying: "So are you". That is: O you great ones "able to protect". That is: to stop and to suffice "us a share from the Fire".
