Commentary
And when he reached the end of his advising them, and concluded by informing them that people are of two types: those who are doomed and those who are saved, and that their intention was to remain upon what leads them to destruction in the Fire, he said, reproaching them for their bad response, calling out to them, repeating the call to increase their alertness and awaken them from heedlessness. And reminding them that they are his people and his supporters, and adding to his previous call because it was not detailed nor included in his judgment: "And O my people, what" that is: what is there of benefits and interests "for me" in that I "invite you to salvation" and Paradise by believing, out of compassion for you and mercy for you, and acknowledging your right. "And" what do you have of that in your being "calling me to the Fire" and destruction through disbelief? The verse is from the intertwining: mentioning salvation that is associated with faith first as evidence for the omission of destruction that is associated with disbelief secondly, and the Fire secondly as evidence for the omission of Paradise first. His intent is to shake them and stir their determination to be ashamed of him by reminding them that what they are doing with him is not from the traits of those who possess honor, repaying him for his goodness to them with wrongdoing.
