Commentary
And when he summarized his entire matter in these two verses, he began to detail it by saying, indicating their hastiness to obstinacy without any pause at all, which was indicated by the omission of the subject and the restriction to the predicate that is the focus of the benefit: ﴿So when there came to them﴾ meaning Moses, peace be upon him, ﴿with the truth﴾ meaning with the established command that no one has the power to change anything of it, being ﴿from Us﴾ according to what we have of might. So a group of his people believed with him. ﴿They said﴾ meaning Pharaoh and his followers, ﴿Kill﴾ meaning a real killing by taking the soul away, ﴿the sons of those who believed in him﴾ so they were ﴿with him﴾ meaning they specified them with that and left others, perhaps they would deny him. ﴿And spare their women﴾ meaning seek their lives by not killing them.
And when this was a matter that repels in the custom of those who believe against faith and turns back those who have believed to disbelief, it was indicated that He, glorified and exalted is He, broke the custom by abolishing it. He said: ﴿And what﴾ meaning while their plot - thus was the original, but He said: ﴿is the plot of the disbelievers﴾ generalizing and linking it to the description ﴿except in error﴾ meaning in deviation from the path that leads to victory and success, because it did not benefit them at first in being cautious of Moses, peace be upon him, nor at last in repelling those who believed in him, their intent. Rather, it was in it their destruction and demise. Likewise, the actions of the wicked against the allies of Allah, no one among them dug a pit of deceit for anyone except that Allah made him fall into it.
