Commentary

﴿To Pharaoh﴾ that is, the king of Egypt. And since the nobles are the first to whom the matter is directed, because by their submission others will submit, he said: ﴿and Haman﴾ that is, his minister. And since it is one of the greatest wonders that the one who comes to support the messenger and rescue him from his distress would deny him, he said: ￿and Qarun﴾ that is, the close relative of Musa, peace be upon him. ﴿So they said﴾ that is, these and those who followed them. As for those other than Qarun, they are ultimately strong and active. And as for Qarun, his actions ultimately show that he is inclined towards disbelief, even if he initially believed. And this was his saying, and even if he did not express it in action at that time, he expressed it in the wilderness. This indicates that he has always been saying it, because he did not repent from it. ﴿A magician﴾ for their inability to overcome him. And he did not say, 'a sorcerer' so that no one would think that he praises him for his skill in the knowledge of magic, which would motivate people to approach him to benefit from him. And it is a report of an omitted subject. Then they described him by saying: ﴿A liar﴾ out of their fear of people believing him. So he sent his most special servant to his most despicable servant to establish the proof against him. And he gave him respite when he faced him with denial and was patient with him until he had given him the utmost excuse.
