Commentary

And when it was one of their greatest sins to deny the resurrection, and they had settled into habits, and they had examined what fate had brought about in the ages and tables, that every second must have a third, and that life is not commonly referred to except for one who has died, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, narrated their response by saying, the essence of which is the acknowledgment of resurrection and the gentleness of admitting sin, where it does not benefit for the condition of it to be absent, which is the unseen: ﴿They said, Our Lord﴾ meaning, O You who have been gracious to us for what has preceded in the abode of this world ﴿You have caused us to die twice﴾ It is said: one at the end of the appointed times in worldly life and another by the shock after resurrection or the sleep after the questioning of the grave. The correct interpretation is that it refers to the verse of Al-Baqarah: ﴿How can you disbelieve in Allah while you were dead, and He brought you to life, then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you to life﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 28]. As for the shock, it is not death, and what is in the grave is not life until there is death from it. Rather, it is a capacity for speech, just as Allah, glorified and exalted is He, enabled the pebbles to glorify Him, and the stones to submit, and the lizard to testify, and the horse when it was said to it (p-19) 'its rider is steadfast' in response to its leap. And the Surah Al-Baqarah ﴿And You have brought us to life twice﴾ one in the womb, and another by resurrection after death, or one by resurrection and another by standing from the shock, or standing in the grave. So we witnessed Your power over resurrection ﴿So we confessed﴾ meaning, this leads to our confession after the repetition of life ﴿of our sins﴾ that occurred due to the denial of resurrection, for indeed, whoever does not fear the outcome will indulge in following desires. So that is a repentance for us ﴿So is there any way out﴾ meaning, from the Fire, even if it is the slightest type of exit by returning to the world so that we may do righteous deeds ﴿from a path﴾ so we may follow it and exit, then there will be for us a third death and a third life to Paradise, which You have made a reward for whoever acknowledges resurrection.
