Commentary
Then he explained that with the most eloquent encouragement for migration; he said: ﴿Indeed, those whom the angels take in death﴾; meaning: they seize their souls completely; due to what they have of deficiency in some meanings; because of what they left of the pillar of migration; as indicated by the omission of the 'ta' (ت); and in the omission is guidance that if one leaves someone who strives to rectify him with charity; or pilgrimage; and similar acts of righteousness; he will be rectified; because the foundation upon which good deeds are built is present; which is faith; ﴿wronging themselves﴾; meaning: by refraining from jihad; by abandoning migration; and remaining in the land of war; where they cannot establish all the rituals of religion; ﴿They said﴾; meaning: the angels; reproaching them; ﴿In what were you﴾; meaning: in what matter of deeds and conditions was your residence in the land of war?
And when the intent of this question was reproach; for leaving migration; ﴿They said﴾; excusing themselves; ﴿We were oppressed in the land﴾; meaning: the land of the disbelievers; we cannot establish the religion; and as if they expressed it indicating that it was vast for them; due to the abundance of disbelievers; it is the whole earth; so it was as if it was said: Was it enough for them with that? And it was said: No; because they were not weak in migration; so it was as if he said: What was said to them? And it was said: ﴿They said﴾; meaning: the angels - clarifying that they were not weak in migrating to a place where they would be safe for their religion -: ﴿Was not the earth of Allah﴾; meaning: encompassing everything; which belongs to Him; ﴿vast, so migrate﴾; meaning: because of its vastness; every one who opposes you in religion; striking ﴿in it﴾; meaning: to where the barrier is removed from you; so the verse is from the interlacing: mentioning jihad first in: ﴿And Allah has preferred the fighters﴾ [An-Nisa: 95]; is evidence for its omission second; after ﴿wronging themselves﴾; and mentioning migration second is evidence for its omission first; by refraining from it; and for this reason, the first group was specifically promised the best reward.
And when they were reproached for their abandonment of migration; their recompense was mentioned; and it was said: ﴿So those﴾; meaning: the far ones from striving for themselves; ﴿their abode is Hell﴾; meaning: for their abandonment of the obligatory; and their increasing the ranks of the disbelievers; and their spreading among the faces of the people; ﴿And evil is the destination﴾; Al-Bukhari narrated; in the interpretation; and the trials; from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with him - that some Muslims were with the polytheists; increasing the ranks of the polytheists; during the time of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him; an arrow would come and strike one of them and kill him; or he would be struck and killed; so Allah (the Exalted) revealed: ﴿Indeed, those whom the angels take in death﴾.
