Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: Is there anything left of the categories of the hypocrites? It was said: Yes; ﴿You will find﴾; meaning: soon; by a promise in which there is no doubt; ﴿others﴾; meaning: from the hypocrites; ﴿they want to be secure from you﴾; meaning: so that no harm comes to you from them; ﴿and they want to be secure from their people﴾; likewise; due to their weakness against each of you; they show you faith when they meet you; and they have disbelief when they meet their people; and this is the meaning of ﴿whenever they are returned to the trial﴾; meaning: the trial of fear when they are in contact; ﴿they are plunged﴾; meaning: they are turned upside down; ﴿in it﴾.
And when these are more deeply rooted in hypocrisy; and more degraded; and closer than those before them; and more hostile; He clarified the meaning of what He clarified regarding those; because it is more severe; and they are more deserving than the earlier ones of severity; and He concealed what He clarified; then He said: ﴿But if they do not withdraw from you﴾; and when withdrawal is submission; not arrogance; He clarified it in His saying: ﴿and they throw to you peace﴾; meaning: submission; and when throwing must have signs by which it is known; He said: ﴿and they restrain their hands﴾; meaning: from fighting you; and harming you; ﴿then take them﴾; meaning: conquer them by every type of conquest you are able to achieve; ﴿and kill them﴾. And when their hypocrisy - as previously mentioned - is in the utmost wretchedness; and their morals are in the lowest baseness; He indicated the promise of facilitating their subjugation; so He said: ﴿wherever you find them﴾; for its meaning is: you encounter them; and you reach them; while you are victorious over them; skilled in fighting them; and aware of them; light in it; for indeed, the skilled one is the clever one; the light one; the aware one; and for this reason, He referred to them with a tool of distance; so He said: ﴿and those﴾; meaning: the distant ones from the attainment of mercy; from victory; and salvation; and all good; ﴿We have made﴾; meaning: by Our greatness; ﴿for you over them a clear authority﴾; meaning: dominance; ﴿manifest﴾; meaning: its strength and dominance are apparent; and these verses are abrogated by the verse of "disavowal"; for it is the later revelation; for it is after "Tabuk."
