Tafsir for verse: 4:89
89They wish that you should disbelieve, as they have disbelieved, and thus you become all alike. So, do not take friends from among them unless they migrate in the way of Allah. Then, if they turn away, seize them, and kill them wherever you find them, and do not take from among them a friend or helper.

Commentary

And when he informed of their misguidance and their steadfastness upon it; he made known their deep involvement in it; so he said: "They wish"; meaning: they love; and they wish for a wide wish; "if you would disbelieve"; meaning: you would find disbelief; and you would renew it; and you would remain upon it always; "as they disbelieved"; and when there was no mutual affection between them for their disbelief; and their being equal to them; there is a necessary connection; he added to the mentioned action - and did not cause - his saying: "So you would be"; meaning: and they wish that it would result from that; and it would follow that you would be equal to them; "equally"; meaning: in misguidance; meaning: you would find disbelief; and you would renew it; and you would remain upon it always; so you hope for their guidance in a time of kindness towards them; and they wish for your disbelief; and your misguidance; so you have diverged in your sects; and you have distinguished yourselves in your intentions.

And when he informed of this affection; he caused their matter to be one of disavowal from them until they rectify; clarifying that their words regarding faith are not accepted unless they confirm it with action; so he said: "So do not take"; meaning: O believers; "from them allies"; meaning: relatives from among you; "until they migrate"; meaning: they establish migration; "in the way of Allah"; meaning: they abandon those who oppose them in the essence of the One who has no likeness; and they cause their abandonment of Him to them; if they are in the land of war; then by leaving it; and if they are with you then by leaving the affection for the disbelievers; and the agreement with them in their words; and their actions; even if they are their closest relatives; and their migration in all of that is by your continuation in all of your words; and your actions; and the general migration is the abandonment of what Allah - glorified and exalted is He - and His Messenger - blessings and peace be upon him - have forbidden. And when he prohibited allegiance to them; and he restricted the prohibition with migration; he caused his saying: "So if they turn away"; meaning: from the mentioned migration; "then take them"; meaning: conquer them by captivity; and otherwise; "and kill them wherever you find them"; meaning: in a lawful place; or sacred place; and when they are in this state, they do not ally with the believers except out of pretense; he said: "And do not take"; meaning: do not pretend to take; "from them a guardian"; meaning: one with whom you act in the manner of the close and friendly; "and do not take a supporter"; against any of your enemies; rather, keep away from them entirely.
