Commentary
And when it has been established by what has passed that the hypocrites are disbelievers; there is no doubt in their matter; and He has revealed - glorified and exalted is He - the ruling regarding the hidden aspect of their matter with intercession; and the apparent aspect with greeting; and He warned those who oppose that with what His wisdom has made obligatory upon Himself from gathering for the Day of Judgment; to rule with justice; and He concluded that the news about them; and about all of that is true; this was a reason for the certainty of the statement regarding their misery; and the avoidance of them; and the distance from intercession for them; and the consensus on that from every believer; even if the structure of the Surah is based on connection; because that is only where it does not lead to severing the command of Allah; so He said (exalted is He) - reproaching those who hesitated in being certain about distancing them -: "So what is [the matter] with you"; O believers; "in the hypocrites"; meaning: what is there for you from the matters of this world; or the Hereafter; in your separation concerning them "two factions"; some of you are harsh towards them; and some of you are lenient with them?
And when this was apparent in the emergence of the commanded matter between the statement of their disbelief; He clarified it with His saying; "And Allah"; meaning: while the situation is that the King who has no command with anyone alongside Him; "has thrown them back"; meaning: He has returned them upside down; "because of what they earned"; meaning: after their acknowledgment of faith; from such great matters; so beware of that; and do not differ in their matter after this clarification; and in the Battle of 'Uhud'; and the explanation from Al-Bukhari; from Zayd ibn Thabit - may Allah (exalted is He) be pleased with him - who said: "When the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) went to 'Uhud'; some of those who went out with him returned; and the companions of the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) were two groups: one group said: We will fight them; and another group said: We will not fight them; then the verse was revealed: "So what is [the matter] with you in the hypocrites"; and he said: It is a good verse that removes sins; and in another narration: as fire removes the impurities of silver." It has ended; so the meaning then is: "Agree to proceed in it with what is revealed to you in these verses"; and when the state of those who are lenient with them is the state of one who wants to guide them; He - glorified and exalted is He - explicitly denied that from them for the clarity of the matter in their disbelief; so He said: "Do you want"; meaning: O believers; "to guide"; meaning: to create guidance in the heart of; "whomever Allah has led astray"; meaning: and He is the Greatest King; whose command cannot be rejected; and this is the meaning of His saying: "And whoever"; meaning: while the situation is that he "whomever Allah leads astray"; meaning: by the totality of His names; and attributes; "you will not find"; meaning: at all; O addressee; whoever he may be; "for him a way"; meaning: to what He has led him astray from at all; and the meaning is: if your leniency with them is in hope of their guidance; then that matter is only for Allah; and it is upon you to make supplication; so whoever responds becomes worthy of continuation; and whoever refuses, his severance becomes a religion; and killing him is a means of drawing closer; and being harsh towards him is obligatory.
