Commentary
And when this necessitated turning away from them entirely; and opposing them; in words; and actions; He clarified - glorified and exalted is He - that the greeting is not from the realm of intercession; and that intercession is dependent on action; while the greeting is dependent on the outward appearance; so He said - glorified and exalted is He - adding (p-351) to what you estimate: "So do not intercede for them while you know their evil intentions"; and He said - expressing with a tool of verification; as a glad tidings for them that they will become - after what they are in now of hardship - kings; and in the status of kings; they will live; and intercession will be made for them; and urging humility -: "And when you are greeted with a greeting"; meaning: any greeting that may be; if it is legislated; and the origin of the greeting is kingship; and its derivation is from "life"; so it is as if the life of kingship is life; and anything else is non-existence; then it was applied to every supplication that is begun with upon meeting; and Al-Asbahani said: The term greeting has become a metaphor for honoring; so all types of honoring fall under the term greeting; "So greet with better than it"; as if you increase upon it; "or return it"; meaning: without increase; and no decrease; and that indicates the obligation of responding to the greeting - from the matter; and immediately - from the 'fa'; and the consensus agrees with that; and neglecting the response is an insult; and the insult is harm; and harm is forbidden; Al-Asbahani said: The initiator says: "Peace be upon you"; and the responder says: "And upon you be peace"; so that the beginning and the ending are with the mention of Allah - glorified and exalted is He.
And how good it is to make it follow the verse of jihad; indicating that whoever offers peace, it is obligatory to refrain from harming him; even if in war; on the condition that among the implications of these two verses is that the foundation of this surah is based on urging goodness; and compassion; (p-352) and communication; and the reason for that is either wealth; and the matter has been previously commanded in His saying (exalted is He): "And when the distribution is present" [An-Nisa: 8]; or something else; and among the greatest of it is speech; because it is the interpreter of the heart; by which compassion is shown; and among the greatest of that is intercession; and the greeting; He said - peace and blessings be upon him - in what Muslim and the four narrators reported from Abu Huraira - may Allah be pleased with him -: "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul; you will not enter Paradise until you believe; and you will not believe until you love one another; should I not guide you to something that if you do it, you will love one another? Spread peace among yourselves."; thus the mention of these two verses is appropriate after the mention of the verse of jihad; which concludes with severity; and punishment.
And when intercession is the greatest of it in good deeds; it is prioritized; especially since its cause is turning away; and the aim of the surah is communication; so its matter is more important; and the consideration of it is more certain; then it encouraged good deeds in response; and warned against abandoning it; by saying - justifying -: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has encompassing knowledge and power; ﴿was﴾; meaning: eternally; and forever; ﴿over all things, a Reckoner﴾; meaning: counting all the various matters; both minor and major; sufficient for them in their provisions; and their rewards; holding them accountable by it; rewarding them for it; and all of this is the matter of the Sustainer;
