Commentary
And when He made clear - glorified and exalted is He - their hypocrisy which necessitated their retreat from jihad with their own selves; and their encouragement of others; that was a reason for him to proceed ﷺ with his matter - glorified and exalted is He - without turning to them; whether they agreed or were hypocrites; so He said - glorified and exalted is He - after the command to mobilize: steadfastness; and all together; and the statement that among them are those who delay; indicating that the matter remains; even if all were slow: ﴿So fight in the cause of Allah﴾; meaning: the One to whom belongs all command; even if you are alone.
And when it was as if it was said: So what should I do with those I was sent to if they do not go out? He said - informing that He had made him the bravest of people; and the most knowledgeable of them regarding wars; and their management; and with His support in that He has taken upon Himself to aid him; and He did not entrust him to anyone -: ﴿You are not tasked except with yourself﴾; meaning: there is no sin upon you concerning your followers if they abandon you; and Allah - glorified and exalted is He - has protected them from that; and there is no harm upon you in this world also from their abandonment; for indeed Allah - glorified and exalted is He - is your supporter alone; and victory is only in His hand - glorified and exalted is He -; and He would not command him with anything except that He is capable of it; for He is full of fighting all the disbelievers alone; even if they are the people of the entire earth; and He had determined in the battle of "Badr"; the appointed time - which it was said: that it is the reason for the revelation of this verse - to go out against the disbelievers; even if no one went out with him; and his companion, the truthful one - may Allah be pleased with him - followed him in fighting the people of apostasy; so he said to the companions - may Allah be pleased with them -: "By Allah, if I found only these two - meaning his daughters: (p-346) Aisha and Asma - may Allah be pleased with them - I would fight them with them."
And when that could deter from supplication; He said: ﴿And urge the believers﴾; meaning: command them with jihad; and forbid them from abandoning it; and from continuing with everyone who discourages them from it; and advise them; and strive in their matter; until they are ready to mobilize whenever they are called; until it is as if they - due to their great readiness - are always present in the ranks; then He resumed the mention; for the fruit of that; and He said: ﴿Perhaps Allah﴾; meaning: the One who possesses all attributes of perfection; ﴿will restrain﴾; with what He has of greatness; ﴿the might of those who disbelieve﴾; meaning: from preventing you from manifesting the religion; by your fighting; and the fighting of those you urge; and indeed He has done that - glorified and exalted is He -; so He fulfilled His promise; and supported His servant; and defeated the confederates alone; until the religion prevailed; and it will continue to prevail until the end of that is through the hand of Jesus - peace be upon him.
And when the listener understands that they cannot be deterred except by that, he said - as an encouragement, and a warning, and as a precaution -: "And Allah"; meaning: the One who has no equal; "is more severe in might"; meaning: in punishment; and severity than the fighters; and the fought against; "and more severe in inflicting punishment"; meaning: in torment; with the greatest of punishments; so that this becomes a destruction for the one being punished; and a deterrent for others from doing the same; Imam Abu Abdullah al-Qazzaz said: It is said: "I inflicted punishment on him as a deterrent"; if I did to him an action that serves as a lesson for others; meaning: a warning; so that they turn away from the intended action because of it; and the one who looks at it; and the one who reaches it; fears that something similar will befall him; meaning: so that this becomes a restraint for him from taking action; and "deterrence"; with the kasra: is restraint.
