Commentary
And when the reason for their rejection was contrary to what they outwardly displayed, believing that he ﷺ is a leader who knows only what they have revealed, and not a messenger from Allah who knows the hidden and what is more concealed; this led them - in a manner of denial - to guide them to reasoning about his message, by which they could remove doubt and clarify the matter. This is through reflecting on this Qur'an, which is consistent in meanings, miraculous in its structure, surpassing the abilities of creation, revealing their hidden aspects despite their efforts to conceal them. So He - glorified and exalted is He - indicated the necessity of contemplating the Qur'an and extracting meanings from it by saying: ﴿Do they not reflect?﴾; that is, they contemplate. It is said: 'You reflected on something' when you thought about its consequences and the end of its matter. ﴿The Qur'an﴾; that is, the one that encompasses all that is intended to be known in distinguishing truth from falsehood, in a system that does not falter and a method that does not tire. Al-Mahdawi said: This is evidence of the necessity of learning the meanings of the Qur'an and the invalidity of the statement of those who said: It is not permissible to take from it except what has been established from the Prophet ﷺ; and the prohibition of interpreting it in accordance with what the Arabic tongue allows; and in it is evidence for reasoning and inference.
And when the estimation was: 'If it were from other than Allah, they would not have been informed of their secrets'; He followed this with His saying: ﴿And if it were from other than Allah﴾; that is, the One who has complete knowledge - as the disbelievers claimed -; ﴿They would have found in it much contradiction﴾; that is, in meaning, with contradictions and a failure to be truthful in informing about the unseen, or some of it; and in structure, with disparity in its miraculous nature. So when they knew that it was from Allah with this conclusive evidence, they preserved their secrets as they preserve their public matters; because the matter of obedience is equal in secret and public; and the adherence to many indicates that the created being is incapable of protecting himself from great deficiency; and his understanding - when excluding the opposite of what follows - the existence of slight differences in it, is refuted by the clear statements.
