Commentary
And when He answered them with what is the truth in existence, He taught them what is etiquette, for the observation of the cause. So He said – beginning anew –: ﴿Whatever good befalls you﴾; meaning: a worldly blessing or an otherworldly one; ﴿it is from Allah﴾; meaning: in existence and favor; and faith is the best of good deeds. The Imam said: They say that they have agreed that His saying: ﴿And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah﴾ [Fussilat: 33]; is intended to mean the word of testimony.
﴿And whatever befalls you﴾; and you are the best of creation; ﴿from evil﴾; meaning: a trial; ﴿it is from yourself﴾; meaning: because of it; so another is more deserving of it. And when their saying necessitated the denial of his prophethood, peace and blessings be upon him, except if he performed every miracle, and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, informed that He is equal with creation in ability, He said – glorified and exalted is He – informing what He has distinguished him with from them: ﴿And We have sent you﴾; meaning: specifically for you with Our greatness; ﴿to the people﴾; meaning: all of them; ﴿as a Messenger﴾; meaning: you do what is upon the messengers of conveying and similar to it; and you have exerted yourself in conveying and advising; and We have not made you a deity to bring forth what is requested from you of good and evil; so if they deny your prophethood, then Allah bears witness to the establishment of miracles and clear signs; ﴿And sufficient is Allah﴾; the All-Encompassing in knowledge and ability; ﴿as a witness﴾; for you regarding the message and the conveying.
