Commentary
And when the decree was: "So what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah for [the sake of] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper'?"; and they used to say: 'We do not give inheritance except to those who protect the honor; and defend the neighbor; and prevent the encroachment'; he said - addressing this decree; stirring them up; inciting them; and reproaching those who sit back -: "And what"; meaning: and what thing; "is [the matter] with you"; of this world or the Hereafter; while you are "not fighting"; meaning: renewing the fight at all times; you do not tire of it; "in the cause of Allah"; meaning: because of facilitating the path of the King; who has complete greatness; and absolute wealth; and because of the salvation of; "the oppressed"; meaning: the demand from the disbelievers is their weakness until it becomes present; and it is permissible - and he is more seated - that it is an accusative [noun] on the specification; indicating that it is among the most noble things in the cause of Allah.
And when the act of fighting is from this, for whom the hope of benefit is greater; then for whom the shame is stronger and more established; he arranged them in this order; so he said: "from men and women and children"; meaning: the Muslims; who the disbelievers have detained from migration; and they were torturing them and tempting them away from their religion; and each of them is sufficient in motivating those of high aspirations; and noble qualities; to fight; then he described them with what incites to their victory; and urges to their assistance; so he said: "those who say"; meaning: they do not slacken; "Our Lord"; meaning: O You who is gracious to us by bringing us out of darkness into light; "Take us out of this village"; then they described it by what supports this supplication; so they said: "of oppressive people"; meaning: by what You facilitate for us of the means; "and appoint for us from Yourself"; meaning: from Your wondrous matters in extraordinary affairs; "a protector"; who takes care of our interests; and when the protector may not have the power of victory; they said: "and appoint for us"; and when they wanted miracles to come to them, they repeated their saying: "from Yourself a helper"; meaning: a powerful victory; to a degree that astonishes those accustomed to miracles; so with this speech, as if He - glorified and exalted is He - said: I have granted you the greater share of inheritance; so what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in My cause; in gratitude for My favor; and where is what you claim of zeal and protection? What is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the victory of these weak ones; to ensure your protection of the honor and your prevention of encroachment; and your defense of the neighbor?!
