And when it was clarified that the condition of the one who refrains from jihad is this world, it was known that the intention of the mujahid is the Hereafter. This is indicated by his saying: "So let him fight in the way of Allah"; meaning: for the sake of facilitating the path of the King, to whom belongs all command, and the protection of the people upon Him. "Those who sell"; meaning: they sell with desire and insistence; and they are the believers; or they take, and they are the hypocrites - using the shared meaning in both of its implications. "The life of this world"; so they leave it for the Hereafter. And when the implication is: "For indeed, whoever refrains from jihad has accepted in the Hereafter the world"; he followed it with his saying: "And whoever fights in the way of Allah"; meaning: he intends to elevate the word of the King, who encompasses the attributes of beauty and majesty. "If he is killed"; meaning: in that cause; and he is upon that intention, after the decree and destiny prevail over himself. "Or he overcomes"; meaning: the disbelievers, so he is safe. "Then We will surely give him"; meaning: with a promise that there is no contradiction in it, with what we have of the encompassing greatness of good and evil. And the verse from the overlap: mentioning killing first is evidence of safety secondly; and mentioning overcoming secondly is evidence of being overpowered first. And perhaps the expression with "surely" indicates the long life of the mujahid, often - contrary to what many people assume - informing that the focus is on the action of the chosen doer, not on the causes. "A great reward"; meaning: in both abodes, for his striving in honoring the religion of Allah - glorified and exalted is He.

And his limiting it to these two categories is an encouragement to steadfastness; even if the enemy is more than double; how many a small group has overcome a large group; "And Allah supports with His victory whom He wills"; "And Allah is with the patient."
