Commentary

And when it indicated the rank of martyrdom; after mentioning the reward of whoever accepted his admonition; even if it is in killing himself; and he condemned whoever refused that; after warning against the enemies from the people of the Book; and the polytheists; and the hypocrites who deceive; the motivations for those who desire virtues became abundant for attaining them; he turned to the believers; delighting them with the beauty of his speech; calling them to jihad; along with guiding them to prepare for it; with what terrifies the opponents; he said - glorified and exalted is He - alerting with the tool of distance; and the form of continuity; that the firmly rooted should not need a reminder about such a thing -: "O you who have believed"; meaning: affirm your belief; and when - glorified and exalted is He - had created for mankind a mind that carries him towards vigilance; and caution from fear; it was like a tool for him; and since he has forgetfulness; and negligence; most of the time - he neglected it; so it was as if he had left a tool that belonged to him; he said - glorified and exalted is He -: "Take your precautions"; meaning: from the enemies; whom I mentioned to you; and warned you against them; the dissenters among them and the hypocrites; "So flee"; meaning: go out; confirming what you claimed; to fight them; hastening; "in groups"; meaning: scattered groups; a detachment following a detachment; do not tire of that at all; "or march forth all together"; meaning: as one army; and do not falter lest you perish; it is as if he said: I have alleviated for you the killing of souls; in the manner that I prescribed for those before you; and I have not commanded you except with what you are familiar with; and you boast about among yourselves; and you condemn the one who leaves it; from the resources of fighting; which are the paths of the heroes; and the avenues of the strong men; and I have made for the remaining among you the beloved ones of victory and the permissibility of the spoils; and for the past, the most beloved of the beloved; which is the rank that there is nothing after it except the rank of prophethood; although it did not diminish in its value at all; and if he had not been killed in that praiseworthy path, he would have been killed in another; at that time.
