Commentary
And when He commanded obedience to the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him; and condemned whoever judged by other than him; and threatened him; and concluded His threat with the command of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to turn away from him; and to admonish him; the estimation was: "We did not send you; nor any of the messengers; except for the kindness to the nation; and to pardon them; and to pray for them; to the utmost of effort and advice." He referred to His saying: ﴿And We did not send﴾; meaning: by virtue of the greatness we possess; and it indicated the thoroughness in the immersion with His saying: ﴿from a Messenger﴾; and when what He, glorified and exalted is He, brings them of the signs; and grants them with it of the miracles; carrying within itself the obedience, He likened it to the one who carries on sending it; so He said: ﴿except to be obeyed﴾; meaning: that His noble position necessitates that; He commands it; and calls to it; ﴿by the permission of Allah﴾; meaning: by the knowledge of the Greatest King; who has encompassed everything in His ability to be obeyed; for what We have made for Him of the distinction with the great attributes; and the noble positions; and the honorable morals; as He, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "There is no prophet except that he has been given of the signs what is like it that mankind has believed in." This was narrated by the two Shaykhs from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him.
And when the estimation was: "So if they had obeyed you, it would have been better for them"; He referred to His saying: ﴿And if only they﴾; meaning: when; ﴿wronged themselves﴾; meaning: by judging by the tyrant; or other than him; ﴿had come to you﴾; meaning: hastening; ﴿and sought forgiveness from Allah﴾; meaning: they followed their coming with the request for forgiveness from the Most Generous King; for what they have presented to Him of the majesty; ﴿and the Messenger sought forgiveness for them﴾; meaning: for what they did not neglect in disobeying him; regarding what was due upon them of obedience; ﴿they would have found Allah﴾; meaning: the Greatest King; ﴿Accepting of repentance and Merciful﴾; meaning: one who is profound in accepting repentance from His servants; and merciful; for His encompassing all attributes of perfection; so He accepted their repentance; and erased their sins; and honored them.
